Harry "Butterfly Hunter" Pavulaan A Knowledgeable New Yorker With a Nimble Net |
|
Dr. Pavulaan has performed the most comprehensive field research on Rhode Island butterflies and has now brought forth his findings both for the enjoyment of serious butterfly enthusiasts as well as for the edification of the scientific entomological community. He brings to light the purest statistics on species biology, markings, distribution, host plants, flight patterns and other facts, including all known English and Latin names for each studied butterfly. He has been extremely meticulous in his efforts - his facts, figures, maps and charts will open your eyes to the fascinating world of the Lepidoptera and other vibrant creatures. This book is a must-read for anyone who is into butterflies!
Having written numerous technical papers and articles, Dr. Pavulaan is at the top of his game. He has authored the Virginia Butterfly Atlas and has contributed much to Butterflies of North America and the Atlas of Eastern Butterflies. His data and opinions have been seen both on and off the Web in such publications as The Taxonomic Report, an internationally read scientific journal, the International Butterfly Breeders Association, Inc. and the Washington Area Butterfly Club. Each paper shows his passion and infectious enthusiasm for butterfly classification. The seeds of this book began germinating in 1983 and by adding his computer and map-making skills to his writing, Butterflies of Rhode Island was eventually born. Dr. Pavulaan first became interested in butterfly classification during his childhood on Long Island, after his father captured his first Cabbage Butterfly. Although he has made his living in St. Louis, Missouri, Providence, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C. as a cartographer for the federal government, he never lost his interest in butterflies and has devoted much of his non-work time to the craft of classification. A father of two, he now lives in the Florida Keys and when he's not weilding his trusty net, he relaxes in his backyard hammock with lots of mixed drinks sporting little, butterfly-adorned umbrellas. |
